RAUMA STEVEDORING IS REDUCING EMISSIONS AND GETTING SAVINGS BY FOLLOWING UP THE WAYS OF DRIVING
Rauma Stevedoring in co-ordination with UPM-Kymmene has executed during this year a pilot project of driver specific follow-up of driving manners. The pilot project related to few container reachstackers and their drivers. The target of the project was to follow up how the driving manners affect to pollution, energy savings, safety and effectiveness of the operations.
The initiative for the pilot project was given by the logistic department of UPM-Kymmene and UPM-Kymmene was also the financier of the project. Jussi Sarvikas, the director of logistics at UPM-Kymmene, states that the global warming and the increasing price of fuel were the impulses for an inspection of the energy effectiveness executed by UPM-Kymmene, where the logistic chain was inspected from the paper mills of Rauma and Jämsänkoski to Germany. One of the further actions on the grounds of that inspection was training and follow-up of the economical driving manners. Sarvikas says that "the thought was to clear the own home first and start the project with own companies to which Rauma Stevedoring still belonged when the pilot project started". Because of the good result of the pilot project UPM-Kymmene is now hoping that the follow-up will also be extended to other subcontractors.
Rauma Stevedoring is now planning to extend the follow-up to contain all 13 container reachstackers and 34 tugmasters that are burning off fuel most of all the machines. When also the container traffic has grown and still does, the biggest reduction of pollution and the biggest energy saving can be achieved under the machines which are used in the container handling.
The possible extension of the project in Rauma Stevedoring will be carried out by buying specialist services which includes technical equipments, customizations of data transmission program and reporting. Significant way to achieve positive results is to motivate the drivers to obey driving manners which reduce the pollution and are more energy effective. One way to motivate is to reward and the best drivers of the pilot project have already been rewarded.

The new road to the port of Rauma has been opened to the traffic. The new road starts from the crossing of the roads Turku - Pori (road no 8) and Rauma - Tampere (road no 12) forking to the city.
We hope that the heavy traffic going to or coming from the port of Rauma will use this new road. Also when coming from the direction of Turku, we ask the heavy traffic to overtake the so called "intersection of forest industry" and drive throughout above mentioned crossing to the new road.

Surfacing of the road to the port of Rauma will begin
- traffic to port via southern intersection
The new road to the Port of Rauma will be started to surface on 7th July.
The surfacing will continue 2 weeks.
Long stoppages are possible during the surfacing and we also have to think about the road workers safety. That's why, the traffic to the port and from the port, especially the truck traffic, is asked to use the southern intersection on the road 8 following the guidepost "Metsäteollisuus" (forest industry).
After the surfacing work the road to the port is available even though some finishing works are still done.

Oy Rauma Stevedoring Ltd continues its investments on china clay handling
In the beginning of April Oy Rauma Stevedoring Ltd released the investment of the first stage of bulk terminal which consist of renovation of the conveyor and funnel structures. Now Oy Rauma Stevedoring Ltd has made an agreement with Lehtosen Konepaja Oy for the second stage which consist of the erection of new conveyors in warehouses no. 34 and 35.
The object of the investment is to reduce the dust emissions and to improve the efficiency of the handling of china clay.
From the discharging funnel on the quay the china clay will be moved with the fully covered conveyor to the roof of warehouse 34 and from there to the roof of warehouse 35. Both warehouses will have connection conveyors and with them the china clay is moved to separate spaces. The discharging funnel is equipped with vacuum. These conveyors will replace the earlier practice where the china clay was moved with lorries to the roofs and dropped to the separate spaces.
The erections start in Petäjäs in August 2009 and conveyors are ready for production in October 2009.
This investment agreement is the biggest separate device investment of Rauma Stevedoring.
