Logistic Engineer, Mr. Janne Virta has been appointed Production Manager as of 1st September 2008. Virta is responsible for coordinating and developing operative actions of production. Virta has earlier worked as Terminal Manager in Container Terminal. 

Virta reports to the Director of Production, Juha Rehmonen. 

 

Logistic Engineer, Mr. Mikko Fagerström has been appointed Terminal Manager to Container Terminal as of 1st September 2008. Fagerstöm is responsible for the service operations of Container Terminal.

Rauma Stevedoring is building a new warehouse no. 50 on the area of Pikisaari between the warehouse no. 49 and the berth. The warehouse is build for increasing the supply of  warehousing services. 

The warehouse is build by Best-Hall Oy. 

The warehouse of 5.000 m² is PVC-coated and light-weight structured.

The building has already started and the warehouse will be ready on the turn of the year.

 

At the same time Rauma Stevedoring will surface the field no. 67 located on the south side of the warehouse no. 49.

The area of the field is 28.000 m² and it is surfaced by Skanska Asfaltti Oy.

The surfacing has already started and the work will be finished during the autumn.

The new road to the port of Rauma has been opened to the traffic. The new road starts from the crossing of the roads Turku - Pori (road no 8) and Rauma - Tampere (road no 12) forking to the city.

 

We hope that the heavy traffic going to or coming from the port of Rauma will use this new road. Also when coming from the direction of Turku, we ask the heavy traffic to overtake the so called "intersection of forest industry" and drive throughout above mentioned crossing to the new road.

Rauma Stevedoring has broken the last record in sequential days when occupational accident, that causes less than three absence days, has occurred. Last record was 76 sequential days. Now, 4th June Rauma Stevedoring has already 80 sequential days without serious accident.

 

In addition to financial targets the occupational health and safety work is important target to BBI-group. Rauma Stevedoring has actively devoted to the safety work and the effects are good. Safety work will continue and strengthen on Autumn when the slippery weather is approaching.  

The new road to the Port of Rauma will be started to surface on 7th July. 

The surfacing will continue 2 weeks.

 

Long stoppages are possible during the surfacing and we also have to think about the road workers safety. That's why, the traffic to the port and from the port, especially the truck traffic, is asked to use the southern intersection on the road 8 following the guidepost "Metsäteollisuus" (forest industry).

 

After the surfacing work the road to the port is available even though some finishing works are still done.

In the beginning of April Oy Rauma Stevedoring Ltd released the investment of the first stage of bulk terminal which consist of renovation of the conveyor and funnel structures. Now Oy Rauma Stevedoring Ltd has made an agreement with Lehtosen Konepaja Oy for the second stage which consist of the erection of new conveyors in warehouses no. 34 and 35.

 

The object of the investment is to reduce the dust emissions and to improve the efficiency of the handling of china clay. 

 

From the discharging funnel on the quay the china clay will be moved with the fully covered conveyor to the roof of warehouse 34 and from there to the roof of warehouse 35. Both warehouses will have connection conveyors and with them the china clay is moved to separate spaces. The discharging funnel is equipped with vacuum. These conveyors will replace the earlier practice where the china clay was moved with lorries to the roofs and dropped to the separate spaces. 

 

The erections start in Petäjäs in August 2009 and conveyors are ready for production in October 2009. 

 

This investment agreement is the biggest separate device investment of Rauma Stevedoring.

The Agreement on the implementation of the first stage of Oy Rauma Stevedoring Ltd's bulk terminal was concluded with Meramatec Oy on Wednesday 2 April 2008.

 

The first stage consists of a renovation of the conveyor and funnel structures in the current warehouse No. 36.

The implementation of this stage starts immediately and will be completed and ready for production operation in the summer of 2009.

 

The second stage encompasses the erection of new conveyors in Warehouses No. 34 and 35. The technical design of and the selection of suppliers for this stage have not yet been completed. According to plans, the second stage will be completed in the autumn of 2009.

 

The objective of the development projects is to reduce dust emissions from the handling of china clay in compliance with the terms of the Environmental Permit, and to improve efficiency in the handling of bulk cargoes.

 

The projects are a continuation of the active implementation of the Company's environmental policy.

 

The total cost estimate of the projects is almost 5 million euros.

 The Finnish research company Taloustutkimus Oy carried out a 7th Survey of Finnish Ports on spring 2007 (first survey was carried out on 1992). One aim of this survey was to find out how the customer companies evaluate the company images of the port operators. According to the survey the August Lindberg Oy (from Raahe) has the best company image of total 32 port operators. Rauma Stevedoring's company image was evaluated as third best.

 

The company image was measured with different criteria of service. Rauma Stevedoring placed among the bests in flexibility, willingness to service, service quality and service selection. According to the survey Rauma Stevedoring has to improve the speed of service and reliability. Rauma Stevedoring is already aware of these targets for development and developing actions has been started.

The Environment Office of West Finland has on 28th of February granted Environmental Licenses to the port of Rauma and Oy Rauma Stevedoring Ltd to operations in the ports of Rauma and Pikisaari. 

In the environmental license of Oy Rauma Stevedoring Ltd has given instructions among others to reduce the dust nuisance caused by the handling of china clay by the end of year 2008 with technical solutions and avoiding the discharging of china clay from vessels in windy conditions.    

Application period to all summer jobs of Rauma Stevedoring ends up 28th February.

Arctic Container Ltd that carries out washing and repairing of containers in the Port of Rauma as a subcontractor of Oy Rauma Stevedoring Ltd has certificated its washing operations of IMDG containers. Certificate is accordant with SQAS (Safety & Quality Assesment Systems). 

To develop our production of service and to prevent congestion, especially on summer and other holiday seasons, we have started to train new stevedores to operate machines. 

During this year 15 new stevedores will be trained to machine work starting on week 5. 

Also 7 employees, who have worked in different tasks, will be trained to machine stevedores during this spring.

Oy Rauma Stevedoring Ltd phases in a new operative data management system on Saturday, 9th September 2006. 

 

The developing project of this new system was started year 2002 and during these years we have modernized the data management of our export, import and depot processes.

 

This new system covers almost all our production of service and the aim is to improve the content and quality of customer service and to overtake the real time control in our operations.

 

On 9th September at 8.00 a.m. we disconnect old programmes and approximately at 3.00 p.m. we have new programmes in use. During the blackout we are busy in updating the information from the old system to the new one. After blackout we handle all services with the new system.

 

During the start-up there might appear some problems that we try to resolve as fast as possible.

Also evening shift will work 4 hours and after that work will be stopped for 4 hours.

 Night shift works normally.

 

This stoppage of work is organized because stevedores express opinion toward EU port directive.

Oy Rauma Stevedoring Ltd's new warehouse (no 8) was consecrated on 13th September. This warehouse is planned specially for stocking of sawn timber. 

 

This new warehouse offers clean and weatherproof stocking space that complies with the quality requirements of sawn timber. The warehouse was also built near the loading ships to minimize the moving distances and costs. 

 

Oy Rauma Stevedoring Ltd has lately focused to marketing of sawn timber and this work is going to be continued.

 

We honest believe that the sawn timber traffic from Rauma is furthermore going to grow and now we have the stocking space needed for that.

The labour dispute of Finnish paper industry is finally settled.  The Council of the Finnish Paperworkers' Union and the committee of the Finnish Forest Industries Federation has today accepted the amicable settlement that was achieved on Wednesday.  In the port of Rauma we'll get back to our normal working times today (1st July) at 10 p.m.

The labour dispute of paper industry has caused the interruption of paper deliveries and lessening of work in the port of Rauma and as a result of that we have to change our working times. These changes concern the five-shift work.

The Finnish Port Operators Association and AKT (the Finnish transport worker's union) has agreed the proposal of a settlement.

In consequense the strike informed to begin on 29th April has been cancelled 

The conciliator general, Juhani Salonius, gave yesterday a proposal of a settlement for AKT and The Finnish Port Operators Association in view to settle the industrial dispute and parties have recommended it to be agreed. At the same time the over time ban was stopped.

 

The conciliator general has asked associations to give a written answer to the proposal of a settlement on Thursday, 28th Aprill, at 12.00.

To speed up the negotiations for the work agreement of stevedores AKT (the Finnish transport worker's union) 

has started a stoppage of work in all Finnish container ports.

 

The stoppage of work has stopped all port operations in Rauma. The work will be continued on Monday morning the 18th of  April  at 06.00.
